Harriet the Spy
Book Cover Design
I created two different book covers for Harriet the Spy. For one of the covers, I took an illustrative approach. The ink bottle plays an essential role in the story, so I illustrated the spread of blue ink spilling down the front and inner cover flap.
I experimented with image compilation for the second book cover, and the front cover features the giant red tomato. The tomato makes sense, as tomato sandwiches were Harriet’s favorite and play a role throughout the book.
The Moodboard
Harriet is a 6th grader living in Manhattan in the 1960s. She walks to school, loves tomato sandwiches, and writes prolifically in her journal. I aimed to capture her inquisitive personality and daily environment in the book cover redesigns.
The Sketches
The original book covers generally feature Harriet walking down the street carrying her notebook. My sketches dove deeper into the story to draw out some other elements that weren’t highlighted in the book covers used over the years.
The Solution
I created two unique takes on the book cover for the final solution. One is more illustrative, and one features image compilation and photography. Both are exciting and engaging and target middle-school-age readers.
Reflection
I stumbled on a first-edition copy of Harriet the Spy in perfect condition at a used bookstore on South Congress Avenue in Austin, TX, for the bargain price of $20! I was thrilled to find one of my favorite books from childhood. I’m delighted I could offer two fresh takes on Harriet the Spy, and I’m pleased with both of my approaches.
